More information : Waingrif [now Waingroves] "was given by Ralph Fitz Stephen to the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, for a house of that order to be built". The deed of gift is dated A.D. 1147 but "an agreement between the abbot and canons of Derley, and the hospitalers, ....is dated A.D. 1121". (1)
Founded 1147(?) "There is some doubt about the date of foundation, (a)...It seems probable that this had only a brief existence and was possibly supplanted by Yeaveley in 1189-99. (2)
"No preceptory was erected; the land was let to a tenant, and at the Reformation passed into lay hands". (3)
[SK41144863] Waingroves Hall [T.I.] (4)
"Waingroves Hall...bears the date 1671". (5)
The building is now divided into two residences: Waingroves Hall and Waingroves Hall Farm. It is generally accepted as occupying the site of the Md. manor-house owned by the Knights Hospitallers. The Hall was built c. 1690 but extensively rebuilt 1800. There are no known remains of a Md. Building and it is not known from where the date 1671 [Authy.5] is derived. (6)
SK41174860 The original Hall is a three-storied building of irregularly-coursed stone with moulded stone quoins and door and window-heads. The attic storey and south front have been rebuilt in brick on a stone plinth, and sash windows inserted in both new and old parts. The east wing of Waingroves Hall Farm is of modern brick and a number of other additions are in similar brick. On the twin gables of the west end are two plaques built into the modern brick. One is dated 1800 and is probably contemporary with the brickwork, the other is dated 1690 and has probably been reused in the 1800 rebuilding. The origin of the 1671 dating by Auth 5 was not established. The extent of the C17th building has been marked on the 15 " AM survey. (7)
No change. The external character of the buildings are entirely c.1800 and the adjacent fishponds are also of this date. (8)
