The Old Hall And The Priory

Summary : House dated 1736, incorporating remains of a Benedictine alien cell of the Abbey of St Wandrille, Normandy; founded in the reign of Henry I, dissolved in 1386. The chapel block, an undercroft and cross-wing survive in the later hall, and were built circa 1300. The priory was granted to the Carthusian Priory of Coventry after suppression of the alien cells.

A Benedictine priory was founded at Ecclesfield in the reign of Henry I, and existed until 1386. Remains of the buildings are incorporated in the present 'Priory' and consist of a chapel of c. 1300 and other Md. walling in the north range. (2-3)

SK 35269426 "The Priory" is a restored 15th/16th c. house with an 18th c. S.W. range at SK 35249425 now a separate residence known as "Old Hall" (a). The monastic remains are confined to The Priory, in which the chapel forms the S.E. corner.

Grade II* The Priory and Old Hall (No.46 Priory Road) The Priory founded in early C12. Chapel circa 1300 with undercroft and 3-light E. window (cusped stepped lancet lights), a small lancet to the south, a smaller look-out window on the west next to doorway (with same sunk quarter moulding as E. window). Room west of chapel has Tudor fireplace. C16/17 mullioned windows. Added to west a 5-bay house of 3 storeys, dated 1736, and faced in freestone courses, with wood mullion and transom windows. (5-6)

Nos 44 and 44A (The Old Hall) and No 46 (The Priory). Former priory and house, now three dwellings. c1300 chapel block with an altered contemporary cross-wing and 19th century restoration; house dated 1736. Ecclesfield Priory was an alien cell of the Benedictine Abbey of St Wandrille in Normandy. Grade 2*. (7)

Supposedly granted to the Carthusian Priory at Coventry. (8)
