Summary : A Medieval town ditch was excavated at Chesterfield containing 14th to 15th century pottery. It may have formed part of the Medieval town defences.
More information : SK 386712. A major medieval ditch was excavated on the
Roman fort site (see SK 37 SE 22) running parallel to the
former boundary of free land along Station Road. Its profile was
V-shaped, and its depth 5m. Fourteenth to fiftheenth century
pottery was recovered from its infill, and the ditch may be
identified tentatively as a medieval town defence for which no
record is known to have survived. (1-2)
