Summary : A 14th century chapel with brick and tile restoration work originally standing on a contemporary bridge of which part of an arch remains. (See SK 33 NE 38 for present St Mary's Bridge). In 1360 Bishop Robert de Stretton issued a licence to the Guardians of the Bridge 'for celibration in the Chapel on the Bridge for two years'. The building which was repaired circa 1932 as a memorial to the Haslam family, was used as a factory in the 17th century. Excavations at the rear of St Mary's Bridge Chapel in 1973 located a pier and cut-water of the Medieval bridge, which was demolished in 1789. These excavations together with a survey of pier foundations made in 1970 enable an accurate reconstruction to be made of the bridge, which appears to have consisted of eight irregularly spaced spans. |
