More information : [SK 21556847] Ch. [T.U.] (1) All Saints Church, Bakewell, is Norman with 13th.c. and 14th.c. additions. In the church is a collection of at least 36 pre-Conquest carved stones, as well as carved fragments of Norman and 13th.c. date. The stones had been used as building material and were found when the Norman church was demolished c. 1842. They must have been collected from many sites round Bakewell and a large number of crosses are represented. The fragments in the south porch have always remained here, but those at the west end of the church were removed to Sheffield Museum and later returned, two stones only remaining in Sheffield. [Article contains 38 listed stones with descriptions and probable dating.] (2-3) The church is in normal use. For cross fragments see G.P.s AO/66/26/2. (4) 802 SOUTH CHURCH STREET (North Side) SK 26 NW 1/35 13.3.51. Parish Church of all Saints A GV Norman to late C14/early C15. A collegiate foundation on earlier Saxon church of which traces remain. Restored mid and late C19. The church is criciform but irregular, embattled with a central tower, octagon and spire. Rich in monuments etc. A valuable and extensive collection of early sepulchural stones is housed in the porch. The Parish Church of All Saints standing on a hillside, dominates most views of the town and is thus an important element in many town groups. (5)
