More information : "A large barrow on Brassington Moor, usually called Galley Lowe, but formerly written Callidge Lowe" was examined by Bateman on 30th June, 3rd July, 1843 & 10th May. 1844 (1) A Food Vessel of Manby's type 3(iii) was found near the head of a skeleton accompanied by a bone dagger pommel (2). An intrusive inhumation was accompanied by a gold and garnet necklace of Kentish type of the seventh century (3). Also found were several iron rivets, perhaps of a coffin, iron arrowheads (?), a bone pin etc. The finds are in Sheffield Museum (4) Galley Low SK 218565 (1-5) The tumulus is situated at SK 21805649. A Bronze Age round barrow and a bank of uncertain date are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at SK 2180 5648. A bank, semi-circular in shape, surrounds the barrow, probably later in date. The features are still extant on Google.Earth.com 2000 imagery (accessed on 25th January 2010). (10)
