More information : [SK 2510 0428] Alvecote Priory and remains of PRIORY [LB] (Benedictine Founded AD 1159). (1) At Alvecote a Priory of Benedictine monks was founded in 1159, dependant on Great Malvern, and dissolved in 1536. The only surviving portion is a 14th c. doorway incorporated into and 18th c. house, now ruined, which was built on the site. It has not been possible to trace the plan. Close by is 30ft of low walling and a ruined dovecote, but these are considered by Chatwin (4) not to be part of the priory. (2-5) See G.P. A0/67/1/6 for the ruined 18th c. house, and F/53/154/1for the 14th c. doorway. The walling is now a characterless heap of rubble, and the dovecote, F/53/154/2, which contains about 350 pigeon holes is roofless and derelict. (6) Scheduled as 'Alvecote Priory'. (7) Description of priory ruins and dovecote. (8)
SK 25080424. The remains of the Benedictine priory of Alvecote. The priory was founded in 1159 and dissolved in 1536. The priory buildings were then converted into a private house which was rebuilt in 1700 and demolished in the 20th century. The surviving building remains date from the 14th century and comprise a roofless, stone structure, believed to represent the undercroft of a domestic building. The remains of a medieval dovecote, thought to be monastic in origin, also survive. The stone-built dovecote is square and contains over 300 L-shaped next holes.
To the south lie earthwork remains relating to the priory estate and the later house and garden. These include a pond, a terraced area defined by earthwork banks and an area of ridge and furrow. Scheduled. The 14th century building and the dovecote are also Listed Grade II. (9) |
