NAVIO ROMAN FORT

The site of a Roman fort at Brough, Roman placename Navio. It was originally Flavian but was abandoned in circa AD 120. It was subsequently rebuilt in timber in circa AD 154 on a different orientation. There was some Severan rebuilding in stone and some early 4th century reconstruction. There is also a possible associated vicus. The Roman fort can be seen as earthworks on air photographs.
