At the back of the farm buildings of Castle Farm are slight remains of earthworks or foundations mounds, traditionally the site of a former castle of Youlgreave, excavated by Bateman in 1855 with no result (2)
"Now but a few stones and fragments of a wall about a mound known as Fulwood's Castle" - the 17th cent. home of Christopher Fulwood. (3)
Foundation wallings exist standing to a max. height of 0.6m. with three larger fragments of undressed stone masonry to a max. height of 3.0m. elsewhere disturbed grassed mounds indicate other foundation walling forming no coherent pattern. Published survey (25") revised. (4)
Pevsner states that the remains suggest a fortifed house rather than a castle. (5)
