More information : (SK 10181006) Moat (NR) (1) 'Maple Hayes - Homestead Moat - Rectangular with rounded corners; on south side is an entrenchment 56 yards in length.' 193 ft x 170 ft. (2) An exceptionally well-preserved moat, the ditches now dry, under grass on a slight slope. A series of dry ditches to the south and west are probably associable with the drainage of the moat and the area. (3) No change. Published survey, correct. (4) SK 102101. Maple Hayes (Abnall). Listed as a moated site. (5) This site would appear to be the half-timbered moated house probably the seat of Thomas de Abbenhall in 1294 (a). (6)
SK 1018 1005. Maple Hayes moated site. A rectangular island circa 30m by 27m with a surrounding dry moat 8-14m wide and up to 2m deep; an outer bank circa 10m wide by 0.4m high flanks the eastern, southern and part of the western sides. An 8m wide gap in the southern outer bank indicates an original access point to a bridge. A channel some 2m wide by 6m long and 0.3m deep exists at the mid point of the west side. The island contains a hollow some 0.6m square by 0.3m deep. Scheduled (RSM) No 13507. (7) |
