More information : (SK 11040544) Roman Building (R) (Site of) (1)
(SK 11050540) A Romano-British farmstead, of which recent APs confirm the outline of the double enclosing ditches as planned by the excavators (100m by 94m), but add the suggestion of a building on the N side and of other enclosing ditches to the NW. The pottery recovered suggests that the farm was is use throughout the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Cropmarks to the S suggest Celtic fields, one of which was of the elongated type. Double ditches to the N suggest a droveway for animals. Mixed farming is therefore indicated. Crucibles and slabs of lead found by the excavators point to a local industry, but despite lead-working the site was certainly a farmstead, flue tiles, tesserae and window-glass all indicating some degree of Romanisation. (See site 'A' on plan). (2)
The site was excavated at intervals over the years 1930-1936 when the ditch-filling was found to contain much pottery, querns, etc, and building materials, especially on the N side, where blocks of dressed sandstone, roofing and flue tiles, tesserae, window glass and charred wood were found. (3)
There are no surface indications of this RB farmstead. The site is at present under the plough. (4) |
