Summary : The site of a horseshoe-shaped gun battery built on the water's edge at the east end of Peel Bay between 1795-1797. This battery replaced one destroyed by a storm in 1793. A small piece of 15th or early 16th century cannon was found below the low watermark in this area in 1863 and may indicate an even earlier battery existed on the site. |
More information : A horseshoe-shaped gun battery was built on the water's edge at the east end of Peel Bay between 1795-1797, as shown on a Warwick Smith painting of 1795 (in the Manx Museum: 1, Plate VII: siting deduced from painting to SC 249 843: 2). The battery was built to replace one destroyed by a storm in 1793.
A 16th century battery on or near the site may well have been destroyed in the same way. A small piece of 15th or early 16th century cannon was found below low watermark in this area in 1863. (1b) (1 - 2) |
