Location :
Staffordshire
Staffordshire Moorlands
Oakamoor
Grid Ref : SK0600045000
Summary : Possible site of a Cistercian monastery, extant 1176-8. Bertram de Verdun gave land at Chotes, or Chotene, to the monks of Aunay for the construction of an abbey. In the third year after its foundation it was moved to Croxden. The exact location is not known, and Tanner suggests that it was at Cawton, close to the Verdun castle in Alton, (see SK04SE31).
More information : A Cistercian Abbey at Cotton (SK 0645), formerly Chotene or Chotes, was founded in 1176. It was moved to Croxden in 1178, (See SK 03 NE 1). A R Mountford says that the site has not yet been verified. (1)
