More information : (SK 05773797) Toot Hill (NAT) Tumulus (NR) (1) Toot Hill Barrow - excavated in the eighteen-fifties by Redfern who found only flints. This round barrow, formerly much larger, was, when excavated by J E Critchlow in 1933 almost square and flat topped. "Layers of charcoal, flints and fragments of iron (apparently parts of a mould) were found and in the centre of the barrow, a small parcel of bones. The flints, chiefly chippings and flakes, include scrapers, arrow and spear-heads and a knife. A halfpenny dated 1806 was found immediately beneath the turf, where also was a layer of charcoal, which suggests that the rounded top has been taken off. From the top turf to a depth of 4 or 5ft charcoal, flints and iron are found. The NE part of the mound was cut away some time ago to facilitate ploughing". (2) A much mutilated bowl barrow, formerly c 16.0m in diameter; the northern part of the mound has been ploughed out. 1.2m in average height but appears higher from the SW where the ground falls away. A large pit has recently been dug into the western part of the mound. (3) Condition unchanged. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4) No change to previous information. (5)
