More information : (SK 04960647) Knave's Castle (R) (Site of). (1) Knave's Castle: A treble entrenchment of between 40 and 50 yards diameter on the south side of Watling St. In the middle is a very small round hill now excavated. (2) Knave's Castle: A simple defensive enclosure. (3) "The remains of this work are situated on Watling Street at the level of 500', but they are very slight and near to the line of a roadway leading from the Watling Street. No certain trace of Knave's Castle survives and its site is occupied by a modern house known as 'Knave's Castle'. Its situation at the Side of Watling Street on slightly raised ground suggests the following possibilities: a. A Roman barrow. This is suggested by its appearance on the OS 6" 1887, a mound with an outer bank c.40m.in diameter. b. A Roman signal station. c. A medieval castle mound. This is suggested by its name, but it does not look like one on the OS 6" 1887. (4) In August 1971 extensive widening of Watling St. cut through a segment of a natural hillock near this point. No sign of a barrow ditch or burial on original land surface. (Gould is apparently implying that the above earthwork was in fact natural). (5)
