Summary : Two round cairns, one now destroyed. The remains of a chamber are visible in the surviving cairn. |
More information : Troutbeck records a barrow on Helvear Hill about 100 yds from the battery (SV 91 SW 68). Two barrows were destroyed at Helvear in 1903 while breaking in new ground for pasture (see SV 91 SW 164). SV 92301237. On the saddle of land that forms Helvear Hill and amongst the pine trees are the remains of a chambered cairn. Despite its ruinous nature the cairn appears to be approximately 8.0m in diameter and averaging 0.3m high with some kerbstones remaining. The chamber remains now visible are 3.5m by 2.0m and 0.6m deep, orientated north east/south west. The proximity to modern walling accounts for its poor condition and also its 'destroyed" state described by Layard. Miss Watts confirmed that it is one of the "barrows" described by Layard but was unable to identify the position of the other. Surveyed at 1:2500 on PFD (see plan with SV 91 SW 68)
