(1) ('A'; 'B'; 'D'; 'E'; 'F') Tumuli (NR) ('D', 'E' and 'F' shown only as site symbols). (2) 'A', 'B'. Confirmed as barrows by Russell. 'C'. Daniel's 25. The possible remains of a chambered cairn too ruined for certain identification by Daniel; queried by Russell. Ashbeee (4) notes the small cairns shown by the OS on the slope above Church point, stating he could not identify them on the ground due to the blanket of peaty soil covering the down. He earlier recorded them destroyed by airfield extension (6). Not identifiable on air photographs. (7) 'A' SV 92271008. A heather-covered probable cairn, of diameter 6.0m and height 0.6m with no cist or chamber visible. There is a depression in the centre of 0.3m. Two possible kerbstones are visible. 'B' SV 92271008 A heather-covered probable cairn, of diameter 5.2m and height 0.7m. No cist or chamber is visible but two large possible kerbstones remain. 'C' SV 92281003. A probable ruined chambered cairn, of diameter 5.0m and height 0.6m. The depression of a possible chamber is orientated south south west - north north east and is 2.1m long, with a depth of 1.2m. Three kerbstones are visible. 'D' SV 92221007. An amorphous mutilated mound approximately 6.5m in diameter and 0.5m high, with no stones visible. Whether this is in fact a cairn must remain very much in doubt. 'E' SV 92221009. A heather-covered mound 6.0m in diameter and 0.7m in height, with no visible stones. It is possibly the remains of a cairn. 'F' SV 92181011. An amorphous mound 5.5m in diameter and 1.0m high, with no visible stones; possibly the remains of a cairn. 'G' SV 92211009 A heather-covered mound approximately 5.5m in diameter and 0.4m high. Whether this is a cairn must remain very doubtful. 'H' SV 92241005 A mound of approximate diameter 7.0m and height 0.6m with no visible stones. Possibly the remains of a cairn. All surveyed at 1:2500 on PFD.(8) Of the published cairns only A, B and C are reasonably identifiable. The others now appear as crescentic scarps of peaty material, their respective heights being measurable only on the lower south east sides; on the north west they fade into the natural slope. Without excavation they may be considered possible cairns but they maight simply be natural accretions of hillwash. (9)
SV92241002 A further kerbed platform cairn is recorded and Scheduled by English Heritage at this location. (10) |
