More information : ('A' SV 90761199; 'B' SV 90831196) Tumuli (NR).(1)
('A') Tumulus (NR). (2)
Site of chambered barrow. One side of passage (north side?) and one large (?cap) stone remaining. (3)
Hencken quotes Bonsor's notes (4) siting a chambered cairn or barrow on the escarpment above Carn Morval Down (Hencken's 18, Daniel's 17). Diameter 27ft, chamberlength 17ft, width 5ft, orientated north east/southwest: Ashbee records it as appearing to have been largely destroyed by a military installation during the second world war, and Daniel states that nothing remains of the site. (5-6)
The above authorities appear to be describing 'A' the site of which shows as a rough disturbed area on air photographs; the site of 'B' cannot be identified. (7)
SV 90751199. On Carn Morval Down, at about 18.0m OD, and situated on the edge of the golf course, is a roughly circular mound, gorse-covered, of diameter 12.5m. Its height varies from a maximum of 1.0m on the north west to 0.5m elsewhere. This is undoubtedly the chambered cairn or barrow of Crawford and Bonsor, but it is not possible to determine visually whether a chamber exists or even existed, though the large stone noted by Crawford still remains on top; it measures 2.0m x 1.0m x 0.4m and has flat sides.
