Summary : Roman finds including coins were recovered during the 1924-25 excavations of Whitby Abbey (NZ 91 SW 10). Despite the presence of these finds no associated Roman structures were recorded. Pottery was also recovered during the restoration of the Abbey. This has been interpreted as indicative of a possible Roman signal station situated nearby. The area was formerly known as Streonaeshalch, the haven of Streon, according to modern interpretation, but according to Bede meaning `fari sinus' or `haven of the watch-tower'. |

During restoration of the Abbey, Roman sherds including some Samian and signal station types have been found which suggests the possibility ofa nearby Roman signal station.
