Summary : Bronze Age round barrow situated on the eastern edge of Brow Moor 640 metres south west of Stoupe Brow Farm. It was accurately mapped following a wild fire in 2003 which destroyed the ground vegetation on Brow Moor. It is approximately 12 metres in diameter and a hole in its centre indicates that it has been excavated in the past. |
More information : (NZ 96030199) Tumuli (NR) (1 of 4) (1) NZ 96040199. The remains of a cairn with a diameter of 11.0 metres and a height of 0.4 metres. Most of its centre has been removed. NZ 9604 0198. Bronze Age round barrow previously described as a cairn situated on the eastern edge of Brow Moor 640 metres west south west of Stoupe Brow Farm. The earth and stone mound stands 0.5 metres high and 10 metres in diameter. There is evidence of past excavation in the centre of the mound. A small upright stone flanks the south east of the mound.(4)
The barrow was accurately mapped following a wild fire in 2003 which destroyed the ground vegetation on Brow Moor. It has a maximum diameter of approximately 12 metres and a hole in its centre indicates that it has been excavated in the past. It is more accurately located at NZ 96039 01985. (5)
A series of burial mounds of differing types many of which had been investigated in the past producing a range of grave goods and remains of human bone etc. The remains represent a substantial barrow cemetery located on the edge of the moor with a panoramic view over the sea and along the coast. There are extensive prehistoric remains located further inland which include many examples of rock art and further barrows. In addition to the barrows there are the remains of several possible Bronze Age huts and associated habitation. (6)
