Summary : A Bronze Age standing stone, originally one of two, the other no longer survives. It is roughly cut into rectangular shape which tapers slightly towards the top and leans a little to to the north west. It is 1.5 meters high and 0.7 by 0.5 meters in section. On the south face the letters JS and ES have been inscribed. The monument is scheduled. There is another possible "Wades Stone" at NZ 81 SW 2. |
More information : A(NZ 82951441) Stone(NR) B (NZ 82901437) Stone(NAT) (1) Two "prehistoric" standing stones near Goldsborough known as Wade's Stones stand about 100ft apart and are 3-4ft high. They are supposed to derive their name from a traditional association with the grave of a giant called Wade. (See NZ 81 SW 2 for the Wade Stone, East Barnby) (2) As described. (3) The stone at NZ 82901437 is now destroyed. (4) Site visited by Stanhope White after 1968 who stated that the stone at NZ 82951441 was roughly squared with deeply eroded top.
