Summary : Enclosure situated on the southeast side of Dunsley. It was originally interpreted as a possible Roman fort but excavations recovered Medieval pottery which are present in Whitby Museum. Field investigations in 1967 found no surveyable features as most of the feature had been affected by landscaping. |
More information : [NZ 85821108] Earthwork [NR] (1) Embankment examined 1939. Several sherds of mediaeval pottery. Pieces of a jug of 13th-14th century date were found during previous excavation and these are now in Whitby Museum. Young's urns may have been mediaeval pot [?]. The late F Pyman residing at the Hall [Dunsley] said that "nothing Roman had been found at Dunsley". (2) The site falls in a landscaped garden and no resurveyable detail survives. (3) A supposed ancient camp situated on the SE side of Dunsley. (4) A fragmentary earthwork of small dimensions, formerly suggested as the site of a Roman fort (a) but the mound is probably of medieval date although no finds have been made on the site. (5)
