Summary : Church 1888-89, by C. Hodgson Fowler (on plaque in chancel). Chevron-tooled dressed sandstone; Lakeland slate roofs with stone ridge and gable copings and cross finials. Decorated style. Nave with north aisle, chancel, north-east vestry and organ chamber, and west tower. Remains of 12th century chancel arch. Base of a medieval standing cross (in situ) and nine Saxon stone fragments at Church of All Saints. |
More information : (NZ 7441801) In the belfry of Easington Church there are nine Anglo-Saxon and two Norman stone fragments, discovered during restoration of the church in 1888. These include four pieces of crosses; one small hogback and two pieces of hogback. Other stones from Easington Church are said to be in the Galilee chapel at Durham. (1)
NZ 7442 1800. Cross base for standing cross in churchyard of All Saints Church, Easington. Scheduled RSM No 25668. The gritstone base stands 3m outside the SW corner of the church and measures 0.54m by 0.5m and stands 0.47m high. The socket hole is 0.28m by 0.26m and 0.18m deep. The cross is in situ and may be associated with the remains of carved crosses kept in the church basement. (This is now recorded separately) (2)
