More information : (Group Centred NZ 65470864) Tumuli. Pike Howe (NR) (A) Pike Howe. Composed of stones which lean towards a large natural boulder (7ft by 8ft and 26ins thick) in the centre. There is no sign of kerbs. No cremation or charcoal. A flint scraper was found near the centre of the cairn. Dimensions: 33ft E-W; 31ft N-S, height 3ft. Examined by R Close 1956, seen by RHH Oct 1956. (B) A small oval cairn of earth and stones 15ft by 10ft and 2ft high. (C) Approx 12ft diameter, height 2ft (Positions of B and C lost in record sheet transfer). (1-2) 'A' at NZ 65470862 is a partially denuded round cairn generally as described. 'B' and 'C' at NZ 65470864 and NZ 65500864 respectively are low consolidated stone heaps effectively obscured by a thick heather cover. They are unlikely burial cairns as such, but neither are part of any clearance system. Surveyed at 1:10 000. (3) NZ 655 086. Pike Howe round cairns. Scheduled No NY/1032. (4)
The Bronze Age round cairn is visible as an earthwork on air photographs, centred at NZ 6546 0862. The feature has a maximum diameter of 6m and has a central depression suggesting previous excavation. The cairn is extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography. (5) |
