Wilton Castle

Summary : Site of a fortified manor house, built about 1330. No trace remains of this building; the present house dates to circa 1807 and was in use as an office by 1953.

Wilton Castle became so called in 1406 after Ralph de Bulmer obtained licence to crenellate his manor-house in 1330. In 1569 it was mentioned as a stronghold. Some of its remains were visible at the beginning of the 19th century, but by 1846 these had disappeared. The present house was built on the old site about 1807 in the Gothic style. (2)

NZ 5819 1967. There are no traces of this Medieval castle at or near the modern Wilton Castle now occupied as offices by Imperial Chemical Industries. (3)
