More information : (NZ 56851804) Tumuli (NR). (1) Examination by Ord in 1843 of these tumuli revealed a paved cist (7 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft) in one, and a carved stone and cinerary urn (16 1/2 ins high) in the other. Both contained human remains. The cist was enclosed in a circle of large, square sandstone blocks set at regular intervals round the base of the barrow. The Middle Bronze Age urn with cremated bones and a replica of the carved stone (see GP) are now in Dorman Museum. (2-4) Both of these cairns are now turf covered. Their present dimensions are: A (NZ 56851801). Diameter 8m, height 0.8m. Large hollow in centre. B (NZ 56901803) Diameter 11.6m, height 1.2m, with a large hollow in the centre. There is also what appears to be a modern excavation trench on the south side. Published survey (25 ins) revised. (5-6) 0069 Eston Moor, Eston NZ 5685 1801. This mound is of composite construction, 8m diameter and 0.9m high, situated in open moorland within a few hundred metres of Eston Nab, the only hillfort in the study area. The mound has a large depression which encompasses the whole of the centre and south-east side. A central stone setting is visible, and has also been disturbed. This is one of a pair of barrows (the other being 0070) excavated by Ord in 1843. Although Ord's account varies from a contemporary newspaper account, the following basic information is certain: a large cist measuring 7 feet (2.1m) by 4 feet (1.25m) was found under an enormous capstone; the cist was covered 'by a circle formed of large square masses of sandstone placed at regular distances round the base of the tumulus'. This was a kerb or revetting circle. Ord states that the cist contained a sooty greasy substance mixed with portions of human hair and small fragments of cremated bone on a paved floor. The newspaper account states that the capstone was not raised, but this may well have been carried out at a later date. This site is a scheduled ancient monument. 0070 Eston Moor NZ 5690 1803 This is an earthen barrow 9.4m in diameter and 1.2m high standing in open moorland at 230m OD close to Eston Nab promontory hillfort. The barrow shows signs of having been recently disturbed. There is a large central depression, 4m in diameter and 1.2m deep, and two sections 0.3m wide have been cut through the remaining bank and the 'excavations' left open. A large stone setting in the centre has obviously been disturbed. This is the second mound opened by Ord (see 0069), who was able to distinguish the layers of different soils used in the construction of the mound. He also found a collared urn and cremation, now in the British Museum. The urn was covered by a remarkable carved slab. Although the original stone is now lost, a replica exists. This barrow is a scheduled ancient monument. (7)
