Summary : The alleged site of a 16th century pele tower. A survey of 1541 states that there is no tower at Humbleton, but a tower is depicted on a map of 1584. Modified after 1603, no trace of such a structure is now visible above ground.
More information : The survey of 1541 states that there is no tower at HUMBLETON but on CHRISTOPHER DACRE's map of 1584 a tower is marked there. (this map is reproduced in (2) but has insufficient information for even approximate siting). (1) A survey of c.1715 refers to the remains of an "old pile" in the village. (2) An account of 1878 states (a) that traces of the fort or peel could still be seen and were marked by a bush of elder (2). (3) Title maps consulted, local enquiries made, RD Surveyor consulted, no information obtained re this site. (4) Listed by Cathcart King and by Dodds. Built between 1541 and 1584, it was modified to accommodate cattle after 1603, and puled down shortly afterwards. (5,6)
