Hob Uid: 27225
Location :
County Durham
Peterlee
Grid Ref : NZ4344041200
Summary : Alleged site of a tower, possibly a pele tower, and a chapel. The tower was demolished soon after 1800 and no trace of it survives above ground.
More information : [NZ 43444120] Chapel [NR] (site of) [NAT] (1)

Tower and supposed chapel at Little Eden (2). "The remains of an oblong square tower, the Turris de Parva Eden, were taken down in 180 (sic) ... A field adjoining to the site of the tower bears the name Chappel Hill, where some traces of foundations are still visible."(3)

Mrs Cracknell (a) has never heard of a chapel or foundations here; the Chapel Hill is now built over by part of the new town of Peterlee. The only foundations found consisted of a few metres of wall, running east to west to the west of Eden Hall. This wall corresponds to the south line of pecks of the small square signifying the site of the chapel on OS 6". No trace of the tower was found. (4)

Listed by Cathcart King. (5)
