More information : The triangular field known as Three Acre Field (centred NZ 48483373) was first ploughed three years ago. Many large undressed stones were removed during ploughing, but nothing else was found.(a) (Area centred NZ 48493369) In and around the hamlet of High Throston are a series of earthworks representing the site of a depopulated village. Bank and ditches varying in height from 0.3m to 0.8m divide the land into small plots, and a small enclosure at NZ 48553373 represents the buried foundations of a building - GP/53/133/3 and 4. The field mentioned in 1a is under crop, and although the banks, ditches and low platforms are still discernible they are too mutilated to survey. There were no stones visible in any of the banks and surface finds were made. With the exception of the field mentioned in1a the area is under pasture. (1) The evidence of artificially disturbed ground in and around High Throston is indicative of a depopulated village. The slight remains however form no coherent pattern and do not merit survey action at 1:2500. (2) Destroyed by ploughing in recent years. Pottery recovered indicates a late medieval date for this site. (3) Extent of the village defined by ridge and furrow. (4) Twelfth century to modern pottery sherds from high Throston deserted Medieval village made it almost impossible to suggest a period of abandonment, as this small area of land had served as a rubbish dump for the enclosure farms. The earthwork plan, provided by air photographs, showed that the settlement was redesigned during the enclosure. (5)
