More information : The castle at Eden (NZ 4238) was apparently the seat of Robert de Brus who, by undated charter, attested by William de St Barbara, Bishop of Durham from 1143 to 1152, granted the Chapel of Eden to the monks of St Cuthbert except for when he or his family were at home when his own chaplain was to sing mass in the chapel in the castle. The exact site of the castle cannot now be traced but it doubtless stood near the vill, chapel and the lake. (See NZ 43 NW 6 for DMV of Castle Eden). (1-3)
