More information : (NZ 471 007 Coffin Field (NAT) (a stone coffin (NR) has been found here ) (NR). (1)

Scarth Wood, Whorlton, a hamlet granted by Stephen de Meynell to the monks of Guisborough for the establishment of a cell in the reign of Henry I. As there is no mention of Scarth in the deeds of Guisborough or in the valuation taken 26 Henry VIII, it is doubted whether the cell ever came into existence. However, Burton (Authority 3b) states in 1758 that "its present remains are very small, and there is a stone coffin and some banks of earth, which were thrown up when the foundation stones were removed about 1746, adjoining on the S of which is a little close yet called the Chapel garth". Graves in 1808 says that Burtons 'banks of earth' have been levelled and there are no remains of the building. The stone coffin is now in the grounds of Arncliffe Hall (Authority 3c). (2-4)
