More information : St Leonard's Hospital (NR) (NZ 36126930). (1) The lands belonging to the Hospital of St Leonard are first mentioned as being annexed to the Priory of Tynemouth in 1320. In 1789 the ruins were still to be traced a little to the W of Tynemouth on the road to Newcastle. In January 1885 when laying out the new park given by the Duke of Northumberland workmen came upon the site of the Hospital on the spot indicated by Brand and in Thompson's Map of the Manor. In the course of the excavations they exhumed two stone coffins, one or two medieval grave covers and a number of skeletons. They also uncovered a tiled floor about 18ins to 24ins from the present surface. It measured about 20 feet by 12 feet and was covered up again to prevent it from damage, while the work was being carried out. (2-3) Hospital of St Leonard, Tynemouth, apparently founded before c1220. (4) The remains of this Hospital are very fragmentary consisting of only a few foundation stones - the W end is paved. The two stone coffins are at the E end. (5) Condition unchanged. Remains as shown on 1/1250 NZ 36 69 SW 1955. (6) |
