Summary : Former rectory now council offices, incorporating the remains of a 15th century tower house. Altered in 1560-70, considerably rebuilt circa 1664 and further altered in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The east elevation was rebuilt circa 1950. The medieval tower was built without licence in or before 1483. |
More information : NZ 3409 4983 Rectory (NAT) (1) The rectory (now council offices) at Houghton-le-Spring, incorporatesthe core of a Medieval rectory house which was licensed to be fortified before 1483. About 1670 all was rebuilt except for the original tower-like structure. The E and W wings date from the late C18th. Gde II*. (2-3) Now Local Authority offices. The E wing was demolished in 1950, but the remainder is in good condition. See ground photographs. (4) Broadway Houghton-le-Spring Area Offices of Sunderland District Council (formerly listed as The Old Rectory). Grade II*. Rectory, now Council Offices.
