Summary : The remains of the deserted Medieval settlement of Coxhoe Village, located 170 metres south west of East House Farm, East Durham. Remains include parallel lines of tofts and crofts forming rectangular and sub-rectangular enclosures. Building platforms are visible within these enclosures, some with surviving stone within. Along the slopes to the west are remains of associated overgrown cultivation terraces and ridge and furrow. The features described are visible as earthworks on air photographs. Scheduled. |
More information : NZ 331357 Coxhoe DMV.(1) The village of Coxhoe or Coxhow is mentioned in an early 14th century will and again in 1616, but not in the Bolden Book. (2) Banks and ditches visible on APs suggest a DMV site. (3) The remains of this deserted medieval village are situated on south facing slopes centred at NZ 331357 and consist of much reduced and weathered banks and lynchets (mainly in the SE of the area) forming three or four rectangular fields. The ill-defined remains of three probable house platforms with associated banks are visible at NZ 33103574, NZ 33233570 and NZ 33313569. Along the slopes to the west are remains of associated overgrown cultivation terraces and ridge and furrow (all evident on RAF AP's. (Authority 3). No survey action.(4)
