More information : NZ 340238. Elstob deserted Medieval village. (1)
Air photographs. (2) Perambulation of the area revealed only two locations of inconclusive earthworks: NZ 3397623778. A rectangular turf-covered platform, 9m east-west by 5 and 0.1m high. Probably a house site.
A similar platform 6m square, 0.3m high, 15m to the west, and separated from the house site by a possible yard open on the south side, may indicate the site of an associated garth. Immediately west, denuded banks may indicate a further enclosure. A slight scarp connects the south-east corner of the house site to a ditch 2.5m wide and 1.2m deep which terminates at a point 50m east and probably represents a field boundary. NZ 3428723867. A rectangular grass-covered platform 7m NE - SW by 6m and 0.2m high. Of uncertain purpose. A small area of ground disturbance to the east and south-east produced no coherent pattern. The remains are too fragmentary and ill-defined for survey action. (3) No change. (4)
Deserted medieval village of Elstob is visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1946, later photography taken in 1995 show the earthworks are still extant. Earthworks indicate building platforms, embanked enclosures, crofts and fishponds. The earthworks are associated with medieval and post medieval ridge and furrow some of which has been levelled. The features are centred at NZ 3404 2378. (5)
