More information : [NZ 23998662] Built into the wall near the N.W. window of Bothal Church is the shaft of a Saxon cross. Many remains of these crosses were found built into the south wall of the chancel when it was demolished - now in the Black Gate Museum Newcastle. (1)
I have not heard of or seen a Saxon cross built into the wall of the church. It may have been removed during the extensive rebuilding about 1910. (2)
No trace of the shaft of a Saxon cross was to be seen in the wall near the NW window or any other part of the church. The explanation in T2 is most probable. Of the many AS crosses in Blackgate Museum, Newcastle none are listed as definitely coming from Bothal. (3)
At least six fragments of late 10th-early 11th century cross fragments and gravestone fragments from Bothal Church are in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle. (4) |
