More information : ['A' - SU 9340 6134; 'B' - SU 9343 6135, and 'C' - SU 9356 6136] Tumuli (O.E.] [3 shown] (1) Four bowl barrows in a row, the two central ones overlapping. They vary from 80 to 100 ft. in diameter and from 5 to 6 ft. in height. (2) A group of bowl barrows situated on elevated, semi-wooded heathland at 'A' SU 9341-6133, 'B' SU 9343 6134 and 'C' SU 93466136. They vary in diameter from 25.0m to 30.0m and average 2.2m in height. 'A' and 'B' are contained within a single ditch and 'C' is also ditched. The ditches are fragmentary on the N side. The central mound 'B' now has the appearance of a single barrow. The barrows which have a few trees and bushes growing on them, have been much mutilated by the digging of army slit trenches and by a vehiclular track which runs the length of the group. Published 1/2500 survey revised. (3)
A contour survey of the site is shown on page 14, and the 4 barrows are listed. (4) |
