More information : Mrs Swithinbank exhibited a prehistoric food vessel found some 40 years ago in a quarry in Elswick Lane Newcastle. (1) In 1873 a cist burial was found in Elswick Road, Newcastle. In it was a food vessel 4-3/8" high, 5" diam. at the lip and 2-3/4" at the base. It has no loops and is of uncommon form and decoration. Now in the Black Gate Museum. (2) Elswick West, Middle and East quarries (now built over) were sited at NZ 223 640, NZ 225 639 and NZ 227 638 respectively, on the north side of Elswick Road, so the findspot was in the area centred NZ 225 639. NZ 225 639: Elswick Road, Newcastle. No details of the cist and burial. The food vessel has vertical lines of notched-stick impressions on the inner rim bevel and horizontal and diagonal lines on the outer. The body is covered with notched impressions in groups of chevrons, vertical and horizontal lines interspersed with chevron motifs. Height 110mm, rim diameter 122mm. Found in 1873 in a quarry.
