Summary : Supposed site of a Roman milecastle, no visible remains and the area has been built over.
More information : [NZ 23796417] MILECASTLE 5 [R] (site of) [NAT] (1) Milecastle 5 was the first milecastle west of Pons Aelius fort, and appears to have been seen by Horsley in 1732 who "thought there were visible signs of a castellum just behind the quarry-house" (a). Quarry House was formerly situated on the north side of Westgate Road at its junction with Corporation Street, at or near where the Bay Horse Inn now stands (area NZ 238641) (2). This position agrees with MacLauchlan,who stated in 1858 that "It is probable there was a Mile Castle where the Wall makes a bend at the top of Westgate Road". The Soc of Ants Private 25", however, shows the site of Milecastle 5 at NZ 23796418 which appears to have been accepted for the OS 1:1250 in 1966 (see authority 1). In 1961, Birley listed Milecastle 5 as unlocated and probably completely irrecoverable or destroyed. (2-5) Any trace of the Milecastle has been obliterated by modern development. (6)
