More information : [SU 97144556] Two R.B. cinerary urns containing burnt bones and ashes found during excavations for buildings. Sited by Clerk of Works from plans of estate. (1) Further excavations by Dr. J.F. Nichols on Binscombe Housing Estate provided evidence of a primitive farming community. Finds included well over a thousand sherds of coarse pottery, fragments of a rotary quern, a fragment of samian and indications of a possible working floor with post holes. The bulk of the material was dated to between A.D. 60 and 120, with a few sherds of the middle 4th century. (2) Dr. Nichol's excavation, known as Binscombe site I(for site II see SU 94 NE 23 ), was made on the east side of Oak Close at SU 97154559. However, Dr. Nichol's pointed out that a considerable amount of potsherds, etc. had come in from all over the Binscombe Estate and still continues to do so from private householders. The cinerary urns and various other items from the estate are on display at Godalming Museum Acc. Nos 1839-63, 655, 677, 985, 986, the rest of the finds are in store at the public library.
