Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 24950

Hob Uid: 24950
Location :
Newcastle upon Tyne
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : NZ2500064000
Summary : A Roman dedication slab first recorded in 1858 indicates a possible temple site. A possible duplication of NZ 26 SW 24.
More information : A Roman dedication slab to the three Mother Goddesses
(No 1318) of uncertain origin, but first recorded in 1858 built up
in the wall of Messrs Mitchell's printing premises, St Nicholas'
Churchyard (area NZ 250640). In Black Gate Museum (now Museum of
Ants, Newcastle University). (The Roman dedication slab together with
Roman altars - see NZ 26 SW 24, NZ 26 SE 29, NZ 26 SE 30 and
NZ 26 SE 56, found in the proximity could suggest a temple site at
Pons Aelius fort, although not mentioned by Lewis 'Roman Temples
in Britain' 1966). (1)
