Summary : A Roman altar dedicated to Jupiter was found at about 1929 on the site of the Roman Fort (NZ 26 SE 19). A possible temple site is postulated.
More information : A Roman altar dedicated to Jupiter (No 1317) discovered
1929 on site of the Roman fort (NZ 26 SE 19) near the SW corner of
the Castle Keep (Area NZ 250638). In Black Gate Museum (now Museum
of Ants, Newcastle University) (The Roman altar together with
other altars - see NZ 26 SW 24, NZ 26 SE 29, NZ 26 SE 56 and
dedication slab - NZ 26 SE 31, found in the proximity could suggest
a temple site at Pons Aelius fort, although not mentioned by Lewis
'Roman Temples in Britain' 1966). (1)
