More information : (Area NZ 251 640) Roman pottery "probably indicating the site of Milecastle No 4" was found in 1929 and 1930, during excavations of the Wall ditch at the east end of Painterheugh (Section 13 on Authority 1 plan). The distance between this site and the presumed site of Milecastle 3 (see NZ 26 SE/15) was estimated at about 1,575 yards. This approximate position of Milecastle 4 was accepted by Birley in 1961. All surface traces have been obliterated by modern development. (3)
The discovery of a milecastle in Westgate Road (see NZ 26 SW/118) (4a) renders this location (NZ 251 640) extremely unlikely. (4)
