More information : [SU 8519 8108] Robin Hood's Arbour [T.I.] EARTHWORK [G.T.]. (1) Robin Hood's Arbour, Maidenhead. A Belgic bank and ditch enclosure of irregular rectilinear form, with a simple entrance on the west side. [See plan AO/LP/62/140] Excavations by Mrs. Cotton in 1960 yielded pottery of Belgic type for which a tentative date of A.D. 1-50 is suggested. Wattle-marked daub suggested a hut side. "The earthwork is of boundary or drainage type and has but a very slight defensive purpose." An Acheulian flint hand-axe, 5" long, was found amongst flints imported to the site, and it is considered very likely that the implement came from the Furze Platt area [see SU 88 SE 10]. (2) The earthwork has been resurveyed at a scale of 1-2500. (3) The finds from the excavation are in Reading Museum. According to Mr. Underhill a Mr. H. E. Barnnard excavated this site c.1890 and found Samian ware (possibly form 32) in the ditch. (4) SU 852811. Robin Hood's Arbour, Maidenhead Thicket, Cookham. Scheduled no 95. (5)
