More information : "There is room for turret 0b some 540 yards east of M/C 1 (Horsley's milecastle 1 - see NZ26NE2) and 250 yards west of Wallsend fort ... ". (area NZ 297659). (1)
The denuded site of Turret 0a was marked on F G Simpson's private 25" plan, near the site of Cousin's House, later Carville Hall (shown on OS 6" 1864 at NZ 296658). (2)
Four Roman inscribed building stones were seen at Cousin's House by Horsley in 1732. Collingwood suggested that these came from the wall rather than Wallsend fort. Two of the stones were in Black Gate Museum (now Museum of Antiqs, Newcastle University) but the remaining two are lost. (3)
The area is entirely built-up. (See NZ 26 NE 2 for alternative sites of Turret 0B and NZ 36 NW 7 for Turret 0A). (4) |
