More information : NZ 2724 4243 Framwelgate Bridge (NAT) (1)
Framwelgate Bridge was probably built early 15th century, having two flat segmental arches which were widened on the upstream side in the 19th century. It is supposed that the third arch of the original 12th century bridge is now hidden by buildings at the Durham end of the present bridge (2). Grade 1 (3).
The original part of the bridge is on the north side and the five ribs in each arch have been refaced or rebuilt. The two cutwaters on the N side are probably original although the parapet is modern. There is no visible trace of the third arch mentioned in Authority 2. (4)
