Summary : Roman tombstone recorded before 1813 in a causeway leading to a footbridge over the Bell Burn, about 0.25 mile north of Binchester. It was engraved `D(is) M(anibus) s(acrum) Nem(onius) Montanus dec(urio) uixit ann(os) XL Nem(onius) Sanctus fr(ater) et coher(edes) ex testamento fecer(un)t.' The translation reads `Sacred to the spirits of the departed: Nemonius Montanus, decurion, lived 40 years. Nemonius Sanctus, his brother, and his joint heirs setthis up in accordance with his will'.
