More information : [SU 60988943] Site of [T.I.] East Gate [G.T.] (1) The site of the E. gate is obviously incorrect and was apparently so sited to accommodate the ford which is said to have existed hereabouts. An alternative position is SU.60938949 at the intersection of the Town Wall, the E. end of the High Street (which clearly follows the line of its mediaeval predecessor) and a projection of the line of Wallingford Bridge, itself of mediaeval date. The Town wall (or bank of the burh) which here runs parallel to the Thames, has a significant bend at this junction (a feature present at both the N & S gates) which makes any suggestion that the original entrance was elsewhere unlikely. However, it should be noted that an East Gate is not mentioned with the other gates of the town in 1555, and it is probable that by that date it had been superseded by a gateway at the W. end of the bridge with a chapel over. (See SU 68 NW 69). (2)
