More information : [SU 60698910] Site of [T.I.] South Gate [G.T.] (1) The South Gate of Wallingford. Whether this entrance in the town's rampart and ditch defences [SU 68 NW 28] is original is doubtful. It is concluded that there is not sufficient evidence to date the defences themselves. (2) A bump on the road at the position given for the site of this gate clearly shows the course of the town rampart and consequently that the gate was elsewhere. The amended position SU 6065 8910 coincides with the junction of a bend in the rampart and the projection of St. Mary's Street within the town, and Squires Walk without. Indirect evidence for this amended siting is provided by the probable remains of St. John's Hospital (SU 68 NW) which lies immediately without the gate beside the road in the manner typical of such hospitals.
