More information : [SU 60438948] Site of [T.I.] West Gate [G.T.] (1) The West Gate of Wallingford. No evidence of date. (2) "The earliest defences of Wallingford were constructed about the time of Alfred" [871-899.] This may, therefore, be the date of the western entrance if it is original. (3) The site of the W. gate has been moved from the Town Ditch to SU 60438948, the junction of the line of the Town Rampart, and the W. end of High Street which clearly follows the line of its mediaeval predecessor.
